Even Cal Newport spends time watching TV
On one of his last podcast episodes, Cal said when he needs to zone out he will watch a kind of mind-numbing TV series (I'm not sure if that's what he said but I think so).
It caught my attention because, being the master of deep work, having no social media, and deliberately having a room with no electronics, I thought these were things that he didn't do.
But surprise surprise, he does, and I suspect we can all do and we have enough time if we stop wasting time (often social media) and stopping our context switching.
There's a huge difference between sitting for 2 hours (with short breaks) to get work done, thinking about the problem deeply, instead of switching context, chatting, checking social media, getting bothered by notifications and email.
Also, there's really a maximum of how far deep work can go and I don't think anybody can do it sustainably for years for infinite hours without diminishing returns. Yeah we can train ourselves, or choose different tasks, but the returns will diminish for sure. It's why you can't run a 10K at the same speed as a 100m race, let alone a 1000m race.
